Ram assisted steering

Since i am putting such a large lift on my jeep i desided to put a ram assiasted steering to releive stress on the streering gear box. In doing this the ram will be pritty much doing all the work but all my steering linkage is still going to be installed i would like to do full hydraulic steering but in doing this my jeep will not be street legal. Sofar for what i have done on the gearbox it has been a simple, I dismantelled it and took me about 30mins todo.

remove pitman arm if not removed

remove the flexable joint u need a 7/16" 12pointed socket. i removed it pritty savagely with a hammer

theres a huge 6 sided nut thing i took a huge adjustable visegrip but a huge pipewrench will work

theres a big threaded thing i used a wrench tool from a grinder and that popped that off and pull out the internals

remove the cap with a 1/2" socket and remove the 4 bolts and pull it out

stuff some paper towel into where that screw like thing comes out. note those ballbearings at that one end they just float there sum to do with the cerculation

stuff a rag into the were most of the internals were just to help with the metal flakes but if u have a tub to bathe it in i wouldnt worry about the paper towel and cloth.

theres a flat spot on the side i drilled a 1/8inch hole as a pilot hole and then it drops down if you look on the back there should be a lil hole thats been plugged stay farly sqaure and parallel with the first hole. On this 2nd hole i decided to drill right through cause the 1/4inch npt tap wouldnt thread properl

 tap both holes

with the bottum hole i took a BRASS 1/4"npt plug and screwed it in so it blocks the the whole passage then i filled the hole with weld. You use brass because if u weld against it the brass will not fuse to the welding

i picked up a couple gallons of thinner cause its cheap and cleans stuff like this gearbox well. i let it soke for about half a day.

blow out the gear box well, soke it again in the thinner only for a couple hours then blow out it well

oil it well throw the ball bearings back in after there cleaned

 reinstall everything
